Social communications and media used on mobile devices like smartphones or computer tablets are called mobile social media. Mobile social media has a higher location establishment. The difference between four distinct types of mobile social media are space and time (Facebook), exchange of messages for that are for a certain venue and place (Yelp), immediate communication (Twitter and Facebook), and reading a Wikipedia entry or watching a YouTube video on a smartphone or portable device.
Some of the most known and used social media platforms include Facebook, MySpace, Twitter, LinkedIn and Pinterest. Most social media groups and users are of likeminded interests. Pinterest is a curation site which allows you to control the content that is created by others. You are basically sharing content, which you approve, with those who want to know more about a subject. “Pinning” on boards from websites, images and other’s content defines Pinterest. Other curative sites include social bookmarking like Reddit or StumbleUpon.
WordPress, Blogger and other non-branded blogging platforms are social media types were you can create and write about any interest you want. You are sharing information and allowing others to reply or comment to your writings (blogs). Use photo sharing sites for social media mediums. These include Photobucket, Shutterfly, and other Adobe based platforms. Video sharing though YouTube and iMemories is social networking and media by using video content to share information.
When you think of social media the type that comes to mind is Facebook or MySpace. These are information and communication sites that give users the ability to communicate with others who are not “next to you.” Sharing information is the key to social media platforms that are used for communication and upkeep. You can upload pictures, write messages, “like”, and follow friends and other acquaintances. Advertising is now becoming a part of social media on these platforms and you can “like”, dislike, join or comment on upcoming products, places and things.
Do be aware, however, that very few social media sites are totally secure – your information can be shared with those you do not want to know where you are or what you are doing.
